Location: El Moro Canyon, Crystal Cove State Park. Time: approx. 1:00pm. Day: Saturday. Just when I thought my hiking adventures wouldn’t get anymore difficult than Deep Creek Hot Springs, the Elevator comes around and squashes any prior notions.
It may not look like it in the photo, but the Elevator trail is quite steep, hence its infamous name. I can’t find any details on the trail, but its steepest incline was around or a little less than 60-degrees. Theo actually slid down and nearly hit Lorraine (in the blue cloth and hat), and Chamuel (in the back) had to hold onto Lorraine to keep all of them from falling back.
My advice for next time: pack some hiking gloves on your trip, and make sure your shoes have enough grip. You’ll never know when you’ll have to get on all fours just to get through a short part of a hike. Oh yeah, and stay hydrated. I didn’t do this before the hike, and this part of the trail kicked my behind pretty badly.
