There is a lot to be said about the commercial success of the Madoka Magica franchise and its progression since it first aired almost two years ago. And if you were lucky enough to secure a seat for the Friday, October 19th premiere at the Downtown Independent in downtown Los Angeles, you would also see how much popularity it has gained, even in the midst of Style Fashion Week going on across the street at the Vibiana. Like the entire week dedicated to the world of fashion, the Madoka Magica movie premiere will take place for a week until the 25th. And while it may not capture world-renowned fame like Style Fashion Week (just yet), it still shows subtle signs of a discreet subculture’s growth into popular mainstream entertainment.
Finally, time traveling done correctly. The top two most riveting parts of this week had to have been all of the girls completely losing it after finding out the truth behind the witch transformations, and Homura going Jason Bourne on anything and anyone that hinders her resolve to protect Madoka.
Crepes, waffles, and taiyaki; girl sure has good taste in food. Also has the ability to wield a very long and powerful spear and fight while eating said food? She must be the long lost lovechild of an affair between Rusty Ryan and Tess Ocean.
It looks like Homura’s streak of cold-shoulder conversation is as cold as ever, which seems to be hinting at a past that’s deeper and darker than we all probably think at this point. And I absolutely love it. It’s like she’s subliminally telling Madoka and Sayaka that they each are going to suffer a world of hurt and despair if they follow in her footsteps. She seems to be the wisest Puella we’ve encountered so far, and yet no one bothers to take her advice. And of course, what does Sayaka go and do?
